Things to do and see around Fort Augustus

Fort Augustus is geographically right in the heart of the Highlands, making it an ideal base for a holiday in Scotland. Link to website

Loch Ness – Cruises on the loch aboard The Royal Scot, run daily all year round from Fort Augustus village. Link to website

Fishing – Trout and salmon fishing is readily available. Day permits can be obtained for salmon fishing in the River Oich, just outside the house. Link to website

Private fishing trips onto Loch Ness can be booked from alongside the Canal, aboard ‘Augusta’. Link to website

Outdoor Activities
Monster Activities at The Great Glen Water Park, South Laggan (15 minutes from Fort Augustus), provides the widest range of outdoor activities in Scotland. Activities available include white water rafting, canoeing and kayaking, speedboat activities, mountain biking, target sports, abseiling, sailing and windsurfing, and quad biking. Link to website

Urquhart Castle, which is situated on a rocky promontory above Loch Ness, is 25 minutes from Fort Augustus by car. The site has revealed traces of Iron Age habitation and was probably fortified as early as the 6th century when St. Columba visited the area and apparently encountered a sea creature. There is a fascinating visitor centre situated within the grounds of the castle. Link to website

Inverness is 50 minutes from Fort Augustus, by car, with stunning views of Loch Ness, from the A82. As well as extensive shopping, attractions include a theatre, cinemas, and a leisure centre with ice rink and swimming pools. Link to website

Culloden Battle Field, the last battle fought on British soil, ending the ’45 Rebellion and Bonnie Prince Charlie’s bid for the throne, is situated just outside Inverness. Culloden battlefield is under the care of the National Trust for Scotland and its visitors' centre is a major tourist attraction. Link to website

Fort William is 45 minutes by car from Fort Augustus. Attractions include, cruises on Loch Linnhe, seal watching, The Dew of Ben Nevis Distillery, The West Highland Museum, The Sea Life Centre and a swimming pool. Link to website

A Jacobite Steam Train runs fron Fort William to Mallaig (June – Oct). 42 miles of stunning views including the Glenfinnan viaduct which was used in the Harry Potter film, ‘A Chamber of Secrets'. Link to website

Nevis Range, Fort William – 45 minutes by car from Fort Augustus. Open all year round and offers extensive walking for all levels, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, paragliding, birdwatching etc. A mountain gondola carries visitors to the top of Aonach Mor, beside Ben Nevis. Link to website
